Oil War - Nigeria

Back

June 2005 Nigeria's lucrative oil reserves may have enriched its politicians but they've brought little but misery to ordinary people. Now, a rebel group is fighting for a share of the profits. "I need help. I need help," begs a woman, clutching her young children in despair. Her home has just been demolished to create luxury housing for foreign oil workers. "The oil boom has turned into the oil doom!" laments Pastor Lekia. Across the Niger Delta, there's growing resentment at the oil industry. "Corruption pervades the whole place, starting with the way contracts are awarded," complains lawyer Ledum Mittee. "There seems to be some sort of collusion between the oil companies and those in power." But militia leader Asari Dokubo has vowed to sever that link. He's fighting to seize control of the oil and give it back to the people. "We own the oil!" he proclaims. "The thieves are the people in Abuja." And across Nigeria, young men are flocking to his call. Last September, he spooked the international markets and forced the price of oil to $50 a barrel by threatening to attack foreign oil companies. The government was forced to agree a truce but he's threatened to rearm unless oil companies leave. Nigerians no longer expect help from their own government. It's militia leaders like Asari who are winning their trust. Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

Looking at these comments, I was wondering if the documentary was supposed to enlighten or divide. A debate with a random person isn't going to get anywhere the system is corrupt we know but rather the question is What can we do about it?

Is the Nigerian "Constitution" written by the people? The answer is no. Does it represent the will of the people? No. Nigeria is a rogue state and rogues support it. Election has been rigged since 1960 by Hausa-fulani and Yoruba Oligarchs and genocidists so those "leaders" were not elected by the people. Nigeria is saddled with the weight of its uncountable evils. Who owns the oil? Who owns the land it is in? Parasite! You are a parasitic criminal and support your kind. That is not a surprise.

At any opportunity you get you guys just jump and start calling the northerners genocidists. Who staged the first military coup in Nigeria? Was it not Nzegwu your kinsman? He it was that set the evil precedence that wrecked not just Nigeria but also stood as an example for other African countries to emulate, and although a bad example it was, it was copied several times and it made you guys the victims you feel you are today. Put the blame on yourselves!!!!

Igbo were first unjustly killed enmasse in Jos(1945) and Kano(1953) and these were unrelated to January 1966 coup. Hausa-fulani first rigged elections with their colonial masters in 1959, then 1964 and 1965; they rigged the Census in 1962 and 1963, massacre Middlebelterns in thousands in 1964 causing grave instability in that region and Western region. Are these not typical of what your Nigeria suffers still today? The coup was not ethnic and that has been clarified from relevant sources.

teyanam, talk to your governors who are behind the East in any possible index despite possible larger revenue, before making your empty unsubstantiated reference. You are scarce in the knowledge of Eastern States in Biafraland. Why have you evaded, as usual, what your false accusations are? Say them or be still. Who owns the oil? hausa-fulani Islamic criminals and their Yoruba oligarch cohorts should take their dirty hands off other peoples' property. They are criminals.

Hey, hey, hey, lets not even get into that one, because if you visit Bauchi, Kano and (need I say?) Abuja, you will be shocked how robbed your region is! Good roads in Bauchi and Abuja, pipe borne water in Kaduna. The oil is yours, you get most of the revenue allocation, but your thieving governors deprive you and encourage your naive selves to blame it on the north. It is only people like you that dont know that the best governors in Nigeria are in the north.

to sooner121, The oilcompanies won't do anything until nigeria have political stability, the reason is simple NO ONE WANTS TO WORK IN NIGERIA if they are not mental. This will drive up the cost of everything! If nigeria would like to profit from oil the should get good leadership first, not corrupted leaders with only have their swissbank account in mind when making political decisions.
